How Success Is Won Over The Long Term

So it alllll started a few weeks ago when I woke up Monday morning, feeling crook as a dog out of nowhere…

Body aches, inability to think clearly… no good.

Shitttt.

I ended up spending the entire day in bed, unable to so much as think about getting up to get any work done…

I suppose I had it coming I guess…

You see, this “spontaneous” sickness was actually a blessing in disguise.

It was my bodies way of telling me “slow the fuck down, take a deep breathe and look around”…

I’d been pushing myself pretty hard with my work for at least a year now…

And I’d made decent progress.

But despite a few breaks here and there, it was ALL I cared and thought about.

Constantly living for the future, thoughts always being somewhere else or figuring out a problem completely irrelevant to the present moment…

I’d go for a walk in nature, and spend the entire time in my head thinking (stressing) about what I had to get done and how quickly I could do it…

I needed stimulants to get ANY work done without instantly feeling like I needed a long nap…

Dumb dumb dumb.

So after this bed-ridden day of recovery, something shifted in me and I decided it was time to actually start looking after my body, taking back control over stress-inducing thoughts and just plain stop living in a state of unease all the time.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been sleeping as much as my body wants to (which was A LOT for a couple of weeks, it’s starting to even out now as I’ve paid back my “sleep debt”)…

I’ve stopped “needing” to move as fast as possible, and decided to value my state of mind OVER how much I progress towards my goals, at least when I’m not in the office anyway…

And I tell you what, I feel a HUNDRED times better.

I’m not saying this to encourage sloth and laziness by any means… that was an obstacle I overcome a loooong way back.

No, it’s about learning to realize that success is a very LONG term game, and pushing yourself to the limit mentally and physically each day is gonna leave you on the losing team at the end of the game, despite how much sense it makes in the moment.

Discipline becomes about doing the right things well (which means being in a state of mind where that’s possible), not just doing more…

Point is, give yourself some space from your goals from time to time…

“Slip the reigns” off every now and then, at least once a day.

Life aint about being too exhausted too enjoy it…

It’s not all as serious as you think.

All the best,
